Fifth Annual Wine Tasting at grapestompers.com

grapestompers.com headquartersgrapestompers.com held its fifth annual wine tasting event at the Burgiss Barn in Laurel Springs, NC on Sunday, October 6, 2002.

The event was attended by more than 200 people, and offered tastes of nearly 20 varieties of wine. Live mountain music was provided by Rob and Bet Mangum, and a delightful dinner of barbecued pork and roast beef was catered by Jimmy Benge of Jiff Catering for all participants.

grapestompers.com would like to thank Monty Combs for taking the photos during the wine tasting.

Local winemakers show off their wines

Wine tasters enjoyed sampling over 20 varieties of wine. The majority of wines served were made from the kits sold by grapestompers.com, but lots of local vintners shared their homemade wines as well. Billy Brown (pictured here) shared his apple and elderberry wines, and Rex Dixon's homemade Blueberry Port was a big hit! The wine must have tasted good, because it disappeared quickly!

While enjoying the wine and food, the crowd was treated to the musical talents of Rob and Bett Mangum.

The Burgiss Barn stage and sound system sure came in handy.

Tim Burgiss, right, explains white wines' characteristics

One of the advantages of a wine tasting is the ability to sample several different wines to "zero in" on your favorite variety. Here Tim Burgiss shares some white wines with fellow wine enthusiasts.

A wine tasting like this is a great way to try out new types of wine in an inexpensive manner (our annual wine tastings are FREE - you just have to bring your own wine glass); before you know it, you'll become familiar with the wide range of sweet and dry red, blush, and white wines. Of course, some folks enjoyed them all!

We set up four different tables at this year's wine tasting:

  • Kit Reds
  • Kit Whites
  • Homemade Wines
  • Wine "doctoring" table

This photo shows Ali Burgiss (Crazy Tom's granddaughter) and a friend helping out by serving delicious sandwiches to the wine drinkers.

Now which one is the Riesling?

In addition to free wine, a special treat this year was the big prize giveaway. Prizes ranged from hats and T-shirts to wine making kits.

In this picture, Tom is getting ready for the drawing by collecting everyone's name tag and putting them in the hats.

Amy Burgiss pouring ice wine

The Ice Wine and Peach Chardonnay were very popular. Just the thing to quench your thirst on a hot summer day!

Here, Amy Burgiss (Brant's wife) is helping out. The Wine Tasting is very much a Burgiss family affair.

John and Riley Burgiss

John Burgiss takes a break from pouring samples of wine to answer a question by his son Riley.

John is Tom's third son and has his own online business called ePocketKnives.com, where he sells classic pocket knives made by Buck, Case, Schrade, and other popular manufacturers.

Dad, can Buzz Lightyear have a taste?
